In 1988, terror swept across New England as nine women were strangled and left along the highways of New Bedford, Massachusetts by an uknown assailant, nicknamed "The New Bedford Highway Serial Killer." The remains of two other missing women, suspected to be additional victims, have never been found.
The first victim was found on July 3, 1988, and the last known victim was located off Interstate 195 on April 24, 1989. All the victims led lives punctuated by addiction, several had known histories of trauma and abuse, and others engaged in sex work. Some knew one another — and none deserved to die.
Deborah Lynn McConnell is believed to have been the third victim and was the only known Rhode Island resident. Deborah’s case launches a special series, where we will support our MA neighbors by individually highlighting each of the women, collaborating with Cold Case Digital Advocacy and Uncovered to visualize their cases, and sharing their enhanced images with law enforcement to assist the ongoing investigations.
It is our sincere hope that our efforts might inspire community members to come forward with information that can bring long overdue answers and justice. We send our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.
